President Bush on the Presidential Transition
11:12 A.M. EST

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you all for coming. Mr. Vice President and Lynne, thank you for being here with us. Laura and I welcome you to the South Lawn -- better known as Barney's playground. (Laughter.)

I want to thank members of my Cabinet who've joined us. We've just finished a Cabinet meeting, and it gave me a chance to tell them how much I appreciate the good work they're doing during this critical time for our nation.

I also appreciate the men and women who make up the Executive Office of the President for joining us today. (Applause.) Some of you have been at the White House for just a few months. Others arrived the same day that we did nearly eight years ago. You're the ones who can tell that my hair has gotten a little grayer. (Laughter.) Others are career employees who have been here for 30, or 40, sometimes 50 years. I can tell that your hair has gotten grayer. (Laughter.)

Don't You Think The Hole Is About Deep Enough?
The core lyric of my favorite country song is "When you're in a hole, stop diggin'." That also sums up the message voters have given Republicans.

Tuesday night, our party suffered a resounding electoral defeat. President-elect Obama and his congressional partners deserve our sincere congratulations on their victory. As the country catches its breath, the conservative movement must regroup and set upon a course to prevent November 4th from repeating itself in two years.

Traveling around the country in the closing days of this campaign I heard the same frustration from voters over and over. We in Washington are long on talk and promises, but short on action.

What I Saw at the Obama Revolution
As I entered Grant Park on Tuesday night to cover the Obama victory party, I happened to glance up at the statues on either side of the broad walkway that serves as a gateway to this treasured Chicago landmark. They are identical bronze representations of a man on a rearing horse. At that moment, a flash of memory struck me like a slap across the face.

There is a famous photo snapped during the 1968 riots at the Democratic National Convention that shows a young man on top of one of these statues waving the black North Vietnamese flag. I then realized that the probable election victory of Obama meant that the argument over Vietnam that served as a cultural, political, and social divide in America for 40 years was either at an end or at the beginning of the end.

Republicans, This Is the First Day of the Rest of Your Lives
For members of the Grand Old Party, this is a day to celebrate. Your long national nightmare, otherwise known as the Bush administration, is over.

Of course, there will be plenty of hand-wringing, finger-pointing and even internecine warfare among party activists and their interest-group allies over the next few weeks as various constituencies within the party seek to assign blame for Tuesday's Democratic sweep, though it was not nearly as bad as it could have been considering the public mood and the Democrats' financial advantage.

Some will predict the end of the GOP. Others will merely consign it to minority party status for years because of demographic changes.

Obama Needs Help in Keeping Promise to Unify Country
New presidents habitually -- and often, mistakenly -- try to do the exact opposite of what their predecessor did. But after George Bush's record as "the Great Polarizer," President-elect Obama definitely should seek to be "the Great Unifier."

Just by getting elected as our first African-American president, he's gone a long way toward healing the country's ugliest historical division.

Obama's victory speech in Chicago's Grant Park Tuesday night was the capstone of a campaign built around the theme of ending partisan and ideological rifts in the nation, too.

Bing: Worry less! Spend more!
You can feel it. Like air hissing out of a tire. Like a banana shrinking and turning black as it goes bad. The shiny, can-do engine of consumer confidence is running down. We're losing it. And with it goes the last shred of hope that the spiral to the center of this vortex is not inexorable.
