Government Must Create Jobs
WASHINGTON -- The last thing we need is another "economic stimulus" package. What we need is a jobs package. And we ought to start calling it that.

Everyone knows the last stimulus plan was a tax rebate for most Americans. It was delivered during the spring and summer and was responsible, some economists say, for what amounted to a brief postponement of the worst of the worst -- what is shaping up as perhaps the deepest recession in a generation.

Katrina for the Rest of Us
For a while, I had expected to emerge mostly unscathed from the eight years of George W. Bush.

I managed not to be in New Orleans right after Hurricane Katrina awaiting rescue by a blundering federal agency. I had held on to my medical coverage and so was not hurt by the nonexistent national policy regarding the uninsured. Neither a toxic borrower nor a toxic lender be -- as I believed and practiced -- and so I did not have to petition Washington for a bailout.

Meanwhile, I had saved and invested and did all those prudent things people are told to do: Put the max allowed in your 401(k). Check. Keep your mortgage small and pay it down. Check. Fight off Car Lust and keep the 7-year-old Honda a couple more years. Check.

Renewing Memories of Gettysburg
GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- In 1863, eleven major roads converged on this town. Which is why history did, too.

The founding of the American nation was the hinge of world history: Popular sovereignty would have its day. The collision of armies here was the hinge of American history: The nation would long endure. Which is why 200 or so generous private citizens recently gathered here for a quiet celebration of their gift to the nation -- a sparkling new Museum and Visitor Center that instructs and inspires.

China Vital to Economic Recovery
WASHINGTON -- We are all Chinese now. That is, we have a nominally capitalist economy, but we don't trust the freewheeling private market when it comes to the crunch. So we turn to the government for protection and stability.

The new interventionism isn't so much socialist as it is Confucian -- a belief that a public-private partnership of the wise ones will get us out of the mess. And if it's any consolation, the Chinese are becoming more like us, even as we are becoming more like them.

A Bush-Style Whitewash
For anyone who followed the story of how and why Sarah Palin fired her state's public safety commissioner, last week's release of a legislative investigation that found she had violated state ethics statutes was anticlimactic. After all, everyone knows that she and her husband, Todd, tried to push Walt Monegan, then Alaska's public safety commissioner, to fire a state trooper named Mike Wooten, who was involved in a bitter divorce from Ms. Palin's sister -- and that after Mr. Monegan refused, he lost his job.

But while the state probe's conclusions were unsurprising, there is still something to be learned from its findings and the McCain-Palin campaign's response. From beginning to end, this episode demonstrates a disregard for the rule of law and a contemptuous attitude toward truth that are all too familiar by now.

Ambushed by History
WASHINGTON -- For all their talk about respecting the constraints of reality, conservatives generally hold to the great man theory of history. It is leftists who embrace economic determinism. Conservatives read biographies of Winston Churchill and wait in constant expectation for the second coming of Ronald Reagan. Charisma and truth, in this view, can always overwhelm material conditions.

And this often leads to the small man theory of electoral setbacks. A losing Republican is not merely unfortunate; he must be incompetent, politically blind, and betrayed by his bumbling underlings. If he is not a winner, he is a fool.

Obama's Getting Off Easy
The Democratic nominee scorned the "prejudice and bigotry and hatred and division" on display in the Arizona senator's campaign. As for his own platform, he said that "we will do all these things because we love people instead of hate them. ... Beware of those who fear and doubt and those who rave and rant about the dangers of progress."

This wasn't last week, but 44 years ago. The Republican from Arizona -- demonized by the entire Democratic and journalistic establishment -- was Sen. Barry Goldwater. And the Democrat, of course, was LBJ.

McCain's Campaign Against Himself
It is a great paradox of American democracy that our presidents might well be chosen, after all these months, by simple state-by-state majorities of the least-informed voters.

That helps to explanation the shocking outbursts of anger, fear, resentment and suspicion that have exploded at some of Sen. John McCain's recent rallies against his Democratic opponent, Sen. Barack Obama.

It makes sense that Republican rage has risen as McCain's polling numbers have tanked. Democrats would be similarly outraged, I'm sure, if the numbers were reversed.

Nuts at ACORN Could Cause Obama Fall
As Obama lengthens his lead, the Republicans are praying that the election becomes close enough for the Democrats to steal. But, meanwhile, ACORN, the radical community group, is becoming an embarrassment for Obama. It is not as if its shenanigans are likely to tip the result, with the Democrats so far ahead, but as they are raided by the FBI in state after state (11 so far) they are becoming identified as the electoral equivalent of Greenpeace -- extremists who will stop at nothing to get their way.

What makes ACORN particularly embarrassing for Obama is that he used to be one of them. He served as general counsel for ACORN in Illinois, channeled millions to the organization from the Chicago Annenberg Challenge (whose funds he distributed), and has lately spent $800,000 of his campaign money to subsidize the group's activities. For this emolument, ACORN has registered voters 15 times over, canvassed the graveyards for votes and prepared to commit electoral fraud on a massive scale.

The Reregulation Mantra?
"It's deregulation's fault!"

That's the conventional explanation for the economic mess.

Barack Obama said, "This is a final verdict on the failed economic policies of the last eight years ... that essentially said that we should strip away regulations, consumer protections, let the market run wild, and prosperity would rain down on all of us".
