Calling master chief
After making a ton of money in the advertising business, Michael Sepso and Sundance DiGiovanni decided six years ago that it was time to goof off. How did these two guys, then in their late 20s, pass the time? They played a lot of "Halo."

Bing: Worry less! Spend more!
You can feel it. Like air hissing out of a tire. Like a banana shrinking and turning black as it goes bad. The shiny, can-do engine of consumer confidence is running down. We're losing it. And with it goes the last shred of hope that the spiral to the center of this vortex is not inexorable.

GOP Can't Afford to Lose the Base
By now you've probably heard: The GOP is becoming too regional, too white, too old to compete nationally. Democrats look like the cast of "Rent," while Republicans look like diehard fans of "Matlock" and "Murder, She Wrote."

Fine. The GOP needs to win over more Hispanics, young people, suburban women. That sounds plausible. But what does "win over" mean?

Detroit Automakers a Relic of the Past
Barack Obama has noted, carefully and correctly, that we have only one president at a time. Yet on at least one issue he has taken the lead and nudged the man who will soon be his predecessor in a direction that he might not have taken without prompting.

It is an issue, moreover, that points up the tension between Obama's appeal to young voters and his calls for creating a new America on the one hand and, on the other, policies that he backs which seem designed to freeze in place the America we have.

Panel on Clinton Secretary of State Speculation

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

SEN. HILLARY CLINTON, (D-NY) FORMER PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: Let me just say that I'm not going to speculate or address anything about the president-elect's incoming administration. And I'm going to respect his process, and any inquiries should be directed to his transition team.

BOB BECKEL, DEMOCRATIC STRATEGIST: What does she want to do? Does she want to spend the next six years getting post offices in the finger lakes of New York, or does she want to go around to the European capitals and go to China? This is a big deal.

Senate Dems Look Ahead to 2010
Even before Democrats know how many seats they will actually control in the Senate this year, with the possibility of a filibuster-proof 60-seat majority on the horizon, the party is already looking ahead to 2010. Improbably, Democrats may buck historical precedent by building an even stronger majority in two years.

In twenty four months, at least thirty-five Senate seats will be decided, including those currently held by President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden. And while first midterm elections are historically tough on any administration, Democrats appear to have more initial targets than their Republican foes.

Youthfulness The Idiom Of American Politics
Ah, the blush of youth. Twenty-five years younger than his opponent, the 47-year-old Barack Obama benefited at the polls from his youthfulness, and it will make his honeymoon all the more ardent.

If race ended up a no-show in the election, age played a bigger role than expected. The Obama campaign openly exploited it in an ad noting that John McCain came to Washington in 1982 and doesn't use e-mail. The e-mail hit may have been unfair; McCain has difficulty typing because of his Vietnam injuries. But the evocation of 1982 made the point cleanly enough: If you're under age 26, McCain has been in Washington longer than you've been alive.
