The big question that everyone is asking is whether this month's general election marked the beginning of a political realignment that will create a new dominant party. Have Americans shifted their loyalties and fundamental assumptions about the parties and about the government, or did we just witness a short-term reaction to years of bad news?

Let's be clear: The election results in 2006 and 2008 constitute the kind of one-two punch that is rare in modern American political history. It would be silly to portray this year's election as a minor hiccup. The nation elected a liberal African-American Democrat from the North as president, and it gave him a majority of all votes cast.

Unions' Creepy Push Against Secret Ballot
The first campaign promise Barack Obama should break is to push through the Employee Free Choice Act. That harmless sounding piece of legislation would let union organizers do an end run around secret-ballot elections: Companies would have to recognize a union if most workers signed cards in support of it.

We're not children here. We know how those majorities can be reached. There's repeated harassment, bullying and more inventive tactics, such as getting workers drunk, then sliding sign-up cards under their noses. Meanwhile, any strong-armed tactics by employers can be dealt with.

The Losers - And a Few Winners - of the Global Financial Crisis
The global financial meltdown is now playing out in dozens of different countries in hundreds of different ways. No country is immune, but the damage will hit some harder than others. Emerging market states, which usually lack the independent and mature political institutions needed for credible and coherent response plans, are among those in greatest immediate danger. Some of the problems the crisis generates will be with us for years to come.

Start with the likeliest losers. In several countries, relatively unpopular governments may soon find themselves at the mercy of political rivals with the power to obstruct their recovery plans. In Argentina, President Christina Fernandez de Kirchner has enemies even within the ranks of her Peronist Party. In Malaysia, the United Malays National Organization-led governing coalition faces a serious challenge from popular opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim. In neither country is the government committed to the longer-term economic reforms needed to inoculate their economies against future crises. The governments of South Korea and Thailand would probably implement effective reform plans if they could. In both cases, domestic political upheaval will probably interfere.

No Other Way To Spin It. Tuesday Was a GOP Disaster
WASHINGTON -- I could make the argument that all is not lost for the Republican Party -- that last Tuesday's across-the-board defeat wasn't an unmitigated disaster. But it would be a pretty dumb argument, and I doubt many readers would take it seriously. The truth is that the Grand Old Party is on a Bridge to Nowhere and may have great difficulty changing course.

The essential problem is that changing course will require turning around and marching, if not sprinting, in the opposite direction. At least initially, this doesn't look like something enough Republicans are willing to do.

Fixing Afghanistan
WASHINGTON -- On the international front, things are no easier for President-elect Barack Obama than they are on the front lines of the economic crisis that he vows to ameliorate first.

His priorities are Iraq and Afghanistan, complicated entanglements that were discussed -- if at all -- with glib simplicity in the final weeks of the presidential campaign. It may turn out that leaving Iraq is going to be easier than the calamities we confront when we turn our attention, as the president-elect likes to say, back to Afghanistan.

Gingrich 2012?
In serious conversations among Republicans since their election debacle Tuesday, what name is mentioned most often as the Moses, or Reagan, who could lead them out of the wilderness before 40 years?

Triumph of Temperament, Not Policy
The Democrats' victory -- and Barack Obama's -- was overdetermined and underdelivered.

Overdetermined: Huge majorities believe the country is on the wrong track and disapprove of George W. Bush; voters prefer generic Democrats over Republicans by 10 percent or more. But Obama beat John McCain by (at this writing) just 52 to 46 percent, running 2 points ahead of Bush in 2004 and 1 point behind George H.W. Bush in 1988. Democrats fell short of the 60 votes they need to stop filibusters in the Senate and made more modest gains in the House than the leading prognosticators expected.

This morning, we woke up to more sobering news about the state of our economy. The 240,000 jobs lost in October marks the 10th consecutive month that our economy has shed jobs. In total, we've lost nearly 1.2 million jobs this year, and more than 10 million Americans are now unemployed.

Tens of millions of families are struggling to figure out how to pay the bills and stay in their homes. Their stories are an urgent reminder that we are facing the greatest economic challenge of our lifetime, and we're going to have to act swiftly to resolve it.
